Online Stories, Reading Apps and a Freebie!

During our classroom reading centers, students have the choice to listen to reading using online stories on the computer or the iPad. Here are a few of our favorite resources to listening to stories.

One of my favorite reading apps is Storia from Scholastic.  It is free to sign up and you will get 5 free e-books to start your library. Every once in awhile you will get access to additional free books if you get emails from Scholastic.  I also use my bonus points to purchase additional books.  Some of the books have "read to me" capability, and some of them have interactive pieces like comprehension questions, videos and facts.

Another great resource for nonfiction reading is National Geographic Young Explorer

TumbleBook is a great online resource for books. Check your local library to see if they offer access to this online. If they don't, you'll have to do a search using the keywords "tumblebooks" and "library" to find this resource.

Storyline Online offers Children's books read by Screen Actor's Guild members (video format).

Read to Me is an engaging site where kids can listen to books told by celebrities.

The celebrities are all Las Vegas performers and are pretty entertaining. Kids may recognize some of them but probably not all.
Printable PDFs of lesson plans are available as well as the author’s site, celebrity reader’s site and publisher site. Stories can be viewed full screen.
I watched a couple and they were very good, something I think students will enjoy. The Read to Me videos took a bit of time to load so I would suggest loading them before showing to students.

Notice in the screenshot above that they even have one in Spanish. Would be great if they added a few more like this. They also had a few for students who are hearing impaired, which uses American Sign Language.
Added to  Awesome Audio Stories and more! Great educational, student-friendly websites for listening centers, quite times, story time, etc.
Visit my new site KB…Konnected Kids. 100+ free educational enrichment sites. Just launched 6-23-12.

Barnes and Nobel has Online Storytime, a program offering videos of popular children's stories read out loud. Many are even read by the authors themselves. There are currently 18 different stories to choose from.

We Do Listen has several free stories that help children learn good social skills. All of the stories are very engaging and feature the character Howard B. Wigglebottom. There are lessons and games as well.

We Give Books  includes a large selection fiction and nonfiction books. You can filter the search options by genre, author or age range. It also lets you zoom in closer to look at details in the illustrations and "move" the book around. You will need to join the site and create a log in and password to access the books.

Listen and Read from Scholastic  offers 54 nonfiction read aloud books on a variety of topics including: careers, animals, science, and social studies.

$75 Wall Words Giveaway from WiseDecor!

I am so excited to be hosting this giveaway for all of my blogger friends and followers!

Katie at Wise Decor Decorating contacted me asking if I would like to do a Giveaway and product review of their Wall Words products. This family-run business has been creating custom decorative wall decals, words, and quotes since 2003.

I jumped at the chance, but I had such a difficult time figuring out which Wall Words I would review…there were so many great designs to choose from! There are also many colors, fonts, and sizes to choose from which is terrific because you can personalize it to your own space or color scheme.

I finally picked the Classroom Rules Modern Wall Decal to spruce up a blank wall in my classroom. When the package arrived it included step-by-step directions and a small squeegee to help me. All I needed was my Wall Words, masking tape, pencil, rule and the squeegee. Five easy steps later I have it up on the wall. I must say that it looks fabulous!

Today is your lucky day! I have the privilege of offering a $75 gift certificate for WiseDecor Classroom Wall Decals. I am also giving the winner any item of their choice from my TPT store.

Head over to their website and check out all the great wall decal options they have for your classroom. They even have a spot dedicated to Classroom Perfect Wall Decals that are perfect for educators and their classroom.
